Today we traveled to Srebrenica to visit the site and memorial of the genocide in 1995. The entire day was very intense, from seeing the graves to watching a video there to coming back to Sarajevo and discussing the event and the entire day. Everyone was experiencing different emotions and expressing them in different ways and it also seemed to create some tension within the group. As social workers we are taught to manage our emotions in order to help our clients without getting too emotionally involved, but when it comes to experiencing an event like Srebrenica sometimes we dont know how to act with our emotions. I feel like I’m still processing the whole day and what I saw. I think I will begin to understand my responses and emotions today more as time goes on and I’m able to think more deeply about it.
