This photo was taken from the train between Zagreb and Sarajevo near Prijedor. I was enjoying the scenery when I noticed the ubiquitousness of RS flags along the tracks; at that point the reality of what had happened in this area twenty years ago struck me in a profound manner. It was, in fact, in this very area of Prijedor where many of the worst crimes against Bosniaks had occurred, including the establishment of a number of concentration camps. This brought to mind images of the emaciated victims of these camps that I had seen on the news when the war was still ongoing. In that moment, the contrast between the beauty of the region and the ugliness of its recent history could not have been brought into more relief.
