How Do You Serve Justice for Genocide?

How do you serve justice for the atrocities of war? What is proper justice for the victims? For many of the survivors there is no such things as justice, they feel like there no place for justice at the hands of man and such things can only be handled by God.

The Court of BiH is tasked with the almost impossible task of serving justice to those indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Due to the sheer number of atrocities not all crimes can be tried at the Hague. The War Crimes Panel has been set up to try less prominent figures in the War.

Our class had the privilege of meeting with the head judge of the war crimes panel, and have her answer our questions. The thing that struck me the most was the sentencing of the convicted. Sentencing for war crimes and crimes against humanity range from 2-45 years, dependent on the crime. From an American perspective, these seem like very minimal sentences when you consider that every time you watch a DVD the penalty for breaching the copyright is stated to be up to ten years. How do you sentence for horrible crimes such as rape, murder, burning of villages and genocide? I am not sure. These just seems like such small sentences in American standards. Maybe the atrocities of war really can only be tried at a higher level.
