Lukomir Hike

Today’s hike in Lukomir was one of my favorite experiences of this trip and one of the best hikes I’ve been on (despite being sick). The eight mile trek took us through different landscapes and climates far above the bustle of the city. The views were breathtaking and the weather perfect. We have such a wonderful group and everyone stuck together and supported each other along the way.

We ended our hike in the village of Lukomir which is a quaint village of 25 people that boasts one outhouse bathroom and a beautiful water fountain with the most delicious spring water. The old culture is still preserved and the homes and people hark back to an older time and a slower pace of life. We were welcomed to the village with a delicious meal of pitas (cheese and potato pies) still warm from the oven followed by traditional Bosnian coffee. We played soccer in the field by the house and explored the village before heading back to Sarajevo and Hotel Kovači.

I feel so lucky to have seen Lukomir and to have met the people of the village as I know there may not be many more years of people living this simple, traditional village life. I feel as though I have been given a glimpse into history and for that I am so grateful. It is hard to believe this was our last scheduled activity before closing ceremonies tomorrow night – these two weeks have flown by – I will be so sad to leave. It was a great way to close out one of the best trips of my life and was truly a magical day!
